Lions Club of Buckingham
Information
23 years of Lionism in Buckingham
The Lions Club of Buckingham celebrated its 25rd Charter in October 2000 with two of the original Charter Members still fully paid up and active members of the Club.
Buckingham is a small market town set in good farming country which seems to be a long way from
anywhere, but isn't really. The Lions Club has been active in the town and the surrounding
villages throughout its 25 years supporting and involved in many local activities. The Lions
organise the town effort for the BBC Children in Need Appeal each year. Throw a party for the
Senior Citizens each year, take part in the Christmas Parade, organise raffles, transport for
old ladies and organise a sponsored horse ride (part of the North Bucks Show in June),
help clean rubbish out of the River Ouse, marshall the town bonfire, and sell burgers.
We have the biggest Pudsey Bear in the world (ex BBC) who features in fund raising efforts
whenever he is allowed out. In July 1998 and again in 1999 Buckingham Lions organised a Town Fair in conjunction with
people working for the Wood Green Animal Charity. This was a roaring success in that it enabled smaller charitable organisations to publicise themselves without having the burden
of laying on all the logistics that such an event demands. We work closely with other service
organisations in the town for the benefit of the citizens of the town. Lions have provided
rubbish bins and oudoor seating at strategic points in Buckingham. We are proud of our
connection with Buckingham Community Racing which provides training and discipline for
teenagers in learning how to race and maintain Karts at Silverstone Circuit. We provided a
kart and had it adapted for disabled persons to use so that all teenagers who wanted to be
involved with this project could be. Lionism is about putting something back into your
community. The members of Buckingham Lions Club hope that they are doing just that.
Recruitment
Prospective members are always welcome and can find us on the first and third Mondays of the
month at the Wheatsheaf in Maids Moreton where an excellent pint can be had. Alternately
contact a club member or ring a club officer .
Melvin Jones Fellowship
David Lloyd is our one and only Melvin Jones Fellow. Buckingham Lions Club is justifiably proud
of his invention of the Laryngectomy Speech Aid and its adoption as a District Project. Many hundreds of examples of his Speech Aid have now been sold to Local and Regional Health Authorities and Trusts as well as to individuals and the device has proved to be of use to other people with speech difficulties. For more detail about this project and links to related areas see our Speech Aid page.
