Sponsored Rides

June at Stowe
this page is slow to load, several pictures!!

Buckingham Lions enjoy a grand day out at Stowe each year with the competitors who turn up to ride the 19km cross country course that loops around the world famous Stowe estate with its landscaped gardens. A cross country bike ride has been organised over the same course as that used by the horse riders, the jumps being optional for bike riders. The course crosses beautiful countryside and sometimes goes around part of the rally track at Silverstone Circuit (home of the British Grand Prix).
Buckingham Lions spend a lot of time putting the rides together, for some it is a year round job. During the week before the course is marked and hunting style jumps are built with options for both experienced and novice riders. All proceeds from the sponsored rides go to local charities and the over and under aged sixteen competitors who raise the most mony are given 2 tickets each to the Horse of the Year Show in London in the Autumn. Cups are also awarded for turnout in both under and over 16 categories.
Buckingham Lions Club is grateful to the various landowners who not only permit but actively encourage the rides to take place over their land.
Hot coffee is available all day for Lions, wives, helpers, competitors and friends and John Leslie (Landlord of the Wheatsheaf at Maids Moreton) organises a bar for us. The barbeque does sterling work in the afternoon and a good social developes after the work has been done to everyones satisfaction.
At th end all we leave are tyre tracks and hoofprints, the way it should be. But we always bring away memories of another Lions event well done.
