Stamford
A town in Lincolnshire, England.
All Saint's from south side
of Red Lion Square
All Saint's church - it is down
the hill from the old top Bluecoat and across the road. Three of my friends
got into big trouble one day: they went into the church and climbed the
steps upto the spire and threw pigeon eggs down at the lollipop man - big
trouble but at the time I wished that I had been there to see the view;
I was to later on, when the church opened it up for fund-raising but by
then I was older and the scale wasn't on the same terms. It was here that
I discovered that I was a growler, being rejected from the choir with half
a crown as compensation.
Being so close to the square it was always
one of the focal points of our attention. I remember waiting there to watch
the much rumoured fight between the mods and the rockers (greasers was
the Stamford name). The motorbike boys had their HQ at the YMCA on StPeter's
Hill. Down in the square there were lots of people waiting but none of
them were mods - just thrill seekers waiting for the action to begin. Three
mods did eventually turn up but retreated when they saw the legions camped
out up the hill from them.
