Poems:           Distance
Distance

So far and sometimes so near,
To crazed distraction and young fear
A phone call every night
Misunderstood words causing fright
Others sheer delight

Counting the days until
Speeding through the darkness
In a long tube of light
One hundred miles an hour
Simply not fast enough

Seems like months before
The floodlit Minster rises above the Vale
Destination and the precious moments

Still the days of a national railway
And lovers meet
On Platform four
Unaware of the world
Continuing,

January 2000
