Friendly vs The Archway Graces, 22nd May 2005, Potters Bar
Ducking Hell! / For Duck's Sake!
On Sunday, London Fields travelled outside the M25 for the first time this season, to take on the Archway Graces in a 40 over friendly match at Potter's Bar. Archway Graces are formed from lecturers and students, and ex-lecturers and ex-students, of Hackney Community College.
Having lost the toss, stand in captain Ian 'Charlie' Charlton was forced to bowl in what turned out to be changeable weather - bright sunshine and sharp showers. The Fields' bowling was exposed for its weakness when Dave Crowther limped out of the match with a torn muscle, and The Archway Graces duly plundered it unmercifully, Dave Hickey being carted for 59 in his 8 overs.
Fast bowler Rick Derons and new member Drew bowled well, as did Ian Charlton, who removed the Graces' most dangerous batsman with his first ball, and Rob "Gully" Harries bowled well at the death.
Unfortunately, by the end of the 40 overs Archway Graces had struck 215 runs off The Fields' bowling to leave us facing a "big ask".
London Fields started brightly, the opening partnership of Dave Hickey and Vincent Croft putting on 32, of which Dave scored, er, 32, before he was bowled by Ken Jones, attempting to push the scoring along.
No other batsman reached double figures, Rob Harries second-top scoring with 9, as The Fields lay down meekly and surrendered for 67 all out, Vince finishing a magnificent 16 over occupation of the crease with the princely score of nought.
Then followed a couple of pints with the opposition and it was back to our inner city homeland for a post-match inquisition at the Pub On The Park..
