A very pleasant sunny afternoon saw a typical Sunday friendly match. A leisurely start allowing players to finish their lunch was followed by Captain's Select clocking up 198 for 7 in a fairly uneventful innings. We picked up wickets at regular intervals, aided by two smart catches from Jason and a cracker at long off by Gordon , who jumped, stretched, parried the ball, and, as he fell to the ground, grasped and held it aloft in triumph. Both Carl and Nick Isaac picked up a brace but the bowling honours went to Matt Cowie with figures of 7-1-18-2.
So at tea neither side had the advantage. Then disaster struck. Four of our top five batsmen attempted to attack bowler Ray's well-pitched up deliveries and all fell cheaply. After nine overs we were 24 for 4. Mark and Sumit started the rebuilding process which was going along nicely until they attempted one too many a risky single and Sumit was run out for 13.
Enter Gordon who proceeded to score 33 out of 52 partnership in just 8 overs, with boundary following boundary to the delight of the crowd. The Select were perhaps beginning to feel their easy victory was slipping away from them, but Gordon fell. The rest of the batsmen all hit some nice shots but the required rate rose and rose until we we were bowled out 48 short. Mark Nuttall scored a fine 42, which gave our score respectability, and could have easily been a half-century if the opposition's fielding hadn't been of such a high standard.
