League Match vs The Crescent & Star, 30th July 2005, London Fields
Crescent & Star 278 all out, London Fields 195 all out
by our roving reporter, and Captain, Jason Lord
Winning the toss, London Fields elected to bowl. A couple of early wickets for Divan (5-28-2) gave LFCC hope, but opposition batsmen Asif and Atif made 71 and 125 respectively. As ever, the need to take every chance in the air was cruelly demonstrated, with Dave Hickey (twice) and Divan Vermeulen being the unusual culprits on this occasion.
With ten overs to go, I threw the ball to third selector Rob Harries who proceeded to take his first ever 5-for with a disciplined spell of five overs. Wicket-taking support came from Dave Hickey and 'keeper Rupert Nightingale with one apiece. Both Rupert and Divan kept wicket tidily with a stumping each. There were catches too for Rupert, Dave and Divan.
Chasing 279 to win, London Fields batted well, but with 6 batsmen in single figures (or worse), the chase was always likely to fall short. There were contributions in the twenties from Divan, Steve Donelan and myself, plus Rupert made a stylish 44.
However, again the most defiance was shown by Rob Harries. Coming in to bat at number 9, with the chase looking like a lost cause, he proceeded to take the game back to the opposition with some extremely confident hitting. Racing to 54 not out (his first ever 50) was sadly not enough, however, as Rob ran out of partners in the 30th over.
Man of the Match - Rob Harries. Many congratulations on an amazing performance with both bat and ball.
