League Match vs Village, 6th August 2005, London Fields
"Village People party"
London Fields 181 for 9 (35 overs) lost by 6 wickets to Village 184
for 4 (30.5 overs)
by our roving reporter and Vice-Captain, Andy Wyatt
It had to happen eventually. When the Village started in this league last year they received some pretty bad thrashings and struggled to compete. Their enthusiasm could not be denied though, and with some match practice and a new signing or two their improvement was easy to see. After a couple of near misses we could not afford to take their challenge lightly. But the evidence suggests we may have been guilty of a touch of complacency.
Batting first we found ourselves 37 for 4 in the ninth over, all four batsmen guilty of careless strokes. Jason and Vince steadied the ship for a few overs but when they departed we had only reached 53. Matt Broadbent and Richard Gorman came to our rescue with a fine partnership. Matt scored 44 to take us to the 100 mark in the 24th over, and when he departed Richard took the dominant role and hit a fine 44 not out including 18 off the last over. We had recovered to a respectable score of 181 of our 35 overs
From the start of their innings the Village surprised us. Crisp shots found the boundary as they set a good pace of around 6 an over. Only three of our bowlers gave them any trouble. Matt Broadbent and Richard Gorman again showing the rest of us how to play, with Tony Tedore picking up a brace when we were virtually out of the game. The Village made it look easy, especially Alan White who eventually fell for 45 having guided his team to the brink of their first league success with a well measured innings.
So congratulations to the Village, who simply outplayed us on the day. Well played to Richard Gorman and Matt Broadbent for delivering with both bat and ball. The rest of the side can hopefully raise our game for the last league game against the Coach and Horses.
