Friendly Match vs Captain's Select, 28th May 2006, London Fields
Oh No Me Hearties, Fields Skittled By Captain's Select
After a wet few weeks in May, London Fields were just glad to get out on the pitch and play for a change. Unfortunately, as it turned out the afternoon might have been spent more profitably in Pub On The Park, along with some old friends who'd popped along for the afternoon.
After winning the toss, captain Andy Wyatt abandoned his previous policy of following Ricky Ponting and Rahul Dravid, and decided to bat first. However, on a damp strip which each ball marked visibly when it pitched (if it pitched), wickets fell with depressing regularity until the Fields found themselves all out for 76. Top scorer with a fine 26 was Matt Cowie, followed by Tony Tedore on 12 and the inevitable Mr Extras on a disappointing (for him) 10. Tony was nearly timed out when your esteemed web master Rob Harries was out for a golden duck to Captain's Select Damon. To be fair, that swinging, seaming, lifting delivery that kept low while still bouncing unexpectedly would have had anyone in trouble (says the man writing the match report).
London Fields knew that we would have to keep the bowling tight to have any chance, so Andy's policy was to remove bowlers as soon as the batsman started to dominate them. Opening bowlers Ty Graham and Simon Yates went for just 26 from the first seven overs before being replaced by Paul Turley and Tony Tedore from, luckily, the Official Turley and Tedore Ends respectively. Tony took 1 for 20 in his 3 overs, but the undoubted bowling star for the Fields was Paul, who took 3 for 15 from his 4 overs, bowling a mixture of medium pace (at the start) and off-spin (as fitness and back problems took their toll).
In the end, the Captain's Select knocked off the runs in 16-odd overs, leaving the grateful London Fielders plenty of early evening drinking time in the Pub On The Park.
