League Match vs The Lamb, 22nd July 2006, London Fields
Rain Stops Play, Play Continues In Bar
After a couple of weeks of continuous sunshine, the Engish weather predictably broke at 2pm on the day of a league match.
Both captains agreed to delay the start in the hope of the weather clearing up, which it duly did by about 3pm. However, it became clear that the pitch would be unplayable, with a layer of soft turf overlying a base of rock-hard sundried earth causing the ball to rear up unpredicably at the batsmen. Fielding was almost impossible too in the slippy conditions.
In any case, the rain returned after two overs of play and a (somewhat weakened, I think) Lamb side gratefully accepted the draw.
With London Fielders at a loose end, and most with a Pass Out from wives and girlfriends, the team retired to the Pub On The Park, where they drank heroically until late that night.
No scorecard; rained off...
