VPCCL League Match vs Pacific, 16th May 2006, Victoria Park

In another close match we took good opposition to the final over in a rain affected skid-fest...
by our midweek correspondent, Chris Skinner

With the rain still coming down as late as 5.45, the match hung in the balance, but with the opposition as keen to play as we were, we went for it.

For once, winning the toss and batting may not have been the best idea, and under the clouds, with a slow outfield and swinging ball, it was hard to score. Chris and Shaun took the conditions a little too literally and went for ducks. Jason and Robin steadied the proverbial ship, the latter playing some good shots before going for 14. Intelligent batting from Jason (38 n.o.), with help from Alec and Rick took us to a respectable 96 from our 16 overs.

We'd defended a smaller total in the past and tight bowling from Jakob and Rick (who went for just 18 and 11 respectively in their 4 overs) gave us hope, but with wickets in hand Pacific were able to stay in control. The difficult conditions were highlighted when Alec went spectacularly 'A over T' as he went to bowl his 1st ball (one of many entertaining/frustrating falls for the team).

Pacific reached their total with 5 balls to spare.

One win from four doesn't sound spectacular, but the league policy of making us play all the best teams first hasn't dampened spirits too much, and we're optimistic we'll get some scores over 100 and maybe a few wins before too long.
