VPCCL League Match vs Sky, 25th April 2006, Victoria Park
Night Falls Over The Victoria Park Astrodome
by our occasional correspondent, Chris Skinner
The Fields took a giant step into the, er, dusk, as they entered the Victoria
Park Astrodome for the first time to debut in the Victoria Park Community
Cricket League. A challenge made all the greater as our first opponents were
Sky, one of the leagues strongest sides.
Losing the toss and fielding, we were consistently sent running as their batsmen
clubbed the ball around the park. They finished their 12 overs (will be 16
when the light improves) with a massive 150. Sadly, this doesn't reflect the
fact that our bowlers did a decent job and that the fielding was of a good
standard. Special mentions to Rhod's keeping for preventing at least 20 more
extras, Will for taking the first wicket - thanks to a great catch from Jakob,
and Lester who took one in his first over for the side, this time Will was
the fielder. Robin deserves credit for (just like in the climax of the Bollywood
epic Lagaan) taking a great catch on the boundary, only to realise he was
stood over the boundary line.
With a massive target to chase, The Fields reached a respectable 84 for 3,
with Lester carrying his bat, scoring 33 not out.
It's an incredibly fast paced form of cricket - there's fun to be had and
lots of scope to improvise. It seems like a friendly league and we look forward
to the next fixture.
