VPCCL League Match vs Vallance, 2nd May 2006, Victoria Park
by our occasional correspondent, Chris Skinner
An excellent win for the fields against impressive opposition capped another enjoyable spring evening.
Batting first, the team had trouble getting runs on the board, not helped by a slow outfield. Batting at number 3, Rick Derons took a while to get going before finding his way spectacularly and scoring an impressive 38 not out - well supported by midweek debutants Dan Spence (9) and Pete Morris (15).
Unsure how defendable a score of 92 was, the team fielded with a spring in their step and opening bowlers Pete and Will put on an irreversible stranglehold on the Vallance batsmen. Will finished with 2 wickets - one thanks to a fantastic catch from Jakob who may well be a contortionist such was his freakish position at the point of catching the ball. Lester also chipped in with a wicket before star man Rick kept things tight enough to round off a great win.
Another positive - Steve Donelan claimed he hadn't kept wicket for 10 years, but did a fine job in the absence of any recognised gloveman. Thanks!
