Corrections to my book

I am very grateful to everyone who has told me of mistakes which I missed when I was checking through my book. It is horribly easy to accidentally write the wrong thing, and sometimes mistakes come in the typesetting process.

January 2002
Two readers have told me of the following errors.
On P.250, 6 lines from the top, the middle term of the RHS of the identity should be
B(x - 1)(2x + 1).

At the bottom of P.357, it should say that Figure 8.F.3 shows a sketch of   y = a cosh x
and   y = cosh-1(x/a).   The upper curve in this sketch should be labelled   y = a cosh x.

On P.390, the integral in the special warning example should have the square root of   9 - 4u2   underneath. This then gives the working at the bottom of P.390 as

The alternative working at the top of the next page should go

On P.439, I have referred to the German mathematician Euler. In fact, he was Swiss, born in Basel in 1707.
All the errors below have been corrected in the second reprinting of the book in January 2002 except for the final one listed.
June 2001
Two readers have told me of the following errors
On P.43, the V in the first line of Qu(1) in Ex 2.A.3 should be S.

On P.484, the answer to Qu(6) in Ex 3.B.3 should be 4/x not 4x.

On P.485, 2(c) should read
The value of h(x) is very large and positive if x is just less than -1.
The value of h(x) is very large and negative if x is just greater than -1.

November 2000
A reader has told me of a couple of small errors on page 281 in section 7D(b).
The equation on the 6th line of this section should read

The equation 10 lines from the bottom of page 281 should read

September 2000
A reader has told me of 5 mistakes. I have given the correct versions below.

On P.213 the first identity in the box should read

On P.431, line 4 down should read

Also on P.431, in the first box, it should read

Equation (2) on P.143 should read

The middle equation in the box at the top of P.149 should read

A reader has pointed out the following two mistakes.
Qu(4) in Ex 8.C.5 on P.315
The answer given on P.521 is wrong. The working should go

Qu(7) in Ex 8.C.5 on P.315
The question and answer don't match.
The solution to the question I've set is
using the second law of logs, so

June 2000
A reader has spotted that the answer and solution to Qu(3) in Ex.9.B.7 don't match the question set.
Here is the solution to the question I asked.
The fraction is top-heavy because there is an x both above and below. (See P.253 for more detail.)
Rewriting the top to avoid having to do algebra long division (always worth doing if possible!) gives

June 1998
Some errors crept into Figure 5.C.9 on page 201 in the processes of drawing and redrawing.
It should be as I show below.

The returns to the t-axis from the most extreme values become more nearly vertical as you increase the number of steps in the sequence.

This diagram has been corrected in the first reprinting which CUP have made of my book. Unfortunately, although all the other errors found before 2002 have been corrected in the second reprinting, this one has accidentally been replaced in its original wrong form.
