I. Thyroid Cancer
Guidelines for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Information for patients and doctors from the British Thyroid Association. Very up-to-date, and produced using expertise from a wide range of medical experts, as well as patients. A truly excellent source.
Linda's Thyriod Cancer Page A personal and rather entertaining view of thyroid cancer - including a list of celebrities with the disease! Very refreshing.
Thyca: Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association Survivors organisation, with plenty of information, good links, and support group lists. Highly recommended for the "newbie" and anyone looking for people to talk to share their thyroid cancer questions and experiences with.
Thyroid Nodules and Cancer: the basics Patient information from About.com. Not all of it comes from experts, but there's a lot here that you won't find anywhere else.
Oncolink thyroid cancer Information from the University of Pennsylvania. Includes the PDQ pages of information for medical professionals, which can be heavy going for the lay person.
AACE Clinical Guidelines for thyroid cancer Guidelines for medical practitioners. Very dry but excellent reading if you are trying to discuss your treatment programme with your doctor in terms that he/she understands.
Thyroid Cancer PDQ (one of many sites) Overview of thyroid cancer staging and treatment. Very dry but widely cited, so your doctor probably knows about it.
Interpretation of Thyroid Tests Making sense of the numbers. Useful, but gives no contact details. Who are these people? I like the site but I always feel uncomfortable about sites which don't mention source or affiliation, much less who to contact.
CancerNet Information from the National Cancer Insitute Oncolink Cancer information from the University of Pennsylvania Resources on Cancer Info for press, patients, etc including pictures, statistics. Look especially at the information for physicians. Intellihealth Johns Hopkins Health information, including cancer site. Winner of a 1999 Webby Award. Center for Alternative Medicine Research in Cancer Provides both simple and detailed summaries of alternative therapies. Not indexed by cancer type, unfortunately, and can be very slow to load. A site search will turn up nothing on thyroid disease - use the databases. Mayo Clinic Sources, Q&A, headlines etc CancerBACUP Information for patients, based in the UK.
IV. Cancer Trials
New!
Phase I Study of Combretastatin A4 Phosphate in Patients with Solid Tumors
NCI study of a drug which has apparently cured one patient with anaplastic thyroid cancer. This specific case is not dealt with
at this site - this is for those interested in knowing about or joining the trial. An article about the
thyroid cancer case was formerly found at CNN Health, but sadly has been removed. Bear in
mind that papillary and anaplastic thyroid cancers are not the same.
Clinical Trials from OncoLink, provided
by the University of Pennsylvania. Lists trials at UPenn as well as others. Includes an email
service to update you on current trials.
Clinical Trials from the NIH. Another
large resource of clinical trials information, providing both doctor and patient summaries. Includes a sophisticated
search engine.
V. Support
Thyca.org Support Links. An excellent selection
of support groups on email and in local areas. CancerHelp Comprehensive Cancer Resources On The Internet
Mayo Clinic Health Oasis - a patient-oriented site covering information on a broad variety of diseases. Winner of the "People's Voice" award for the "Health" category in the 1999 Webby Awards.
John's Hopkins Intelihealth - a phenomenal source for intelligence, news, advice, and even shopping. The judges' choice in the "Health" category of the 1999 Webby Awards. The Health Centre (UK) - a site designed like a doctor's waiting room, with a "clinic", "library", and other useful resources. UK-oriented but with something of interest for everyone. Bandolier: a site devoted to evidence-based medicine. Covers the evidence for many treatments or preventive measures (though none relating to thyroid disorders). Intended for a professional audience, but written very clearly so a lay person can understand the conclusions (if not, say, the statistical methods). Highly recommended.
