Muslims gathering for Friday prayers come with all kinds of stresses and concerns on their minds. The Jum'a prayer and the khutbah that preceeds it, offer a welcome respite from the tensions of the week. It is an opportunity to turn away from the mundane, worldly matters and to reflect on our innerselves, and on the higher matters of our spiritual development.

The Khateeb or preacher has a captive audience and should try to focus on on a positive message. His khutbah should address the head as well as the heart, so that everyone leaves the Jum'a prayer, ready to face the world, emotionally and spiritually renewed.

A good khutbah should energise us, strengthen our faith in Alláh [ímán] and thus help us face life's ups and downs, with equal grace and forebearance.
