Problem-based
learning in the UK
Maggi Savin-Baden
I
have been using PBL in the UK and researching it since 1987. My interest
in this field is in understanding staff and students experiences of PBL
and in particular ways in which they manage disjunctions which emerge from
engaging with PBL.
Over the last 5 years
I have carried out research across 4 UK universities in diverse department
exploring staff and students experiences of problem based learning. My
current research is into staff's experiences of being problem-based facilitators
and subsequently I plan to explore students experiences of managing disjunction
in the context of problem-bassed learning
I
live in Perthshire, Scotland - we moved here two years ago to be near the
mountains. So when I am not working in universities I spend my time walking
and rock and ice climbing in the Scottish mountains and French and Swiss
Alps....
I
offer consultancy, predominantly in the field of PBL - helping faculty
to design and redesign curricula, guiding them in writing PBL materials
and providing staff development.
Other support on developing inter-professional education, organizational
learning, building and leading successful teams, reflective practice within
the organization, and qualitative research methods is also available
