NEWS

MMSI numbers for DSC VHF Radio.

We have fitted a lot of VHF DSC radiotelephones this year where the boat owner concerned hadn't applied for an MMSI number.

This has been worrying us, as it spoils the major advantage of DSC, because without an MMSI number entered into a DSC VHF radiotelephone set, the DISTRESS button just doesn't work, and some people may not realise that until the time comes when suddenly they are in a situation where they need it!

The OFCOM website  ( Ship Radio Licensing section) is the portal for new registrations, transferring ownership, and also adding DSC to an existing standard Ship Radio Licence, in order for the boat to be issued with an MMSI number.

WHEN DONE ONLINE IT IS ALL FREE.

So, if your boat has an old-style VHF radio fitted, but doesn't currently have a Ship Radio Licence, or if it has a DSC/VHF radio fitted, and doesn't have a Ship Radio Licence, or MMSI number, (or if the radio came with the boat, and you haven't transferred the ownership details):

Don't worry - if you do it online (on the Ofcom website, under the Ship Radio Licensing section), it is completely free to do.

All that the authorities are interested in is having a reasonable description of your vessel in the event of search and rescue being needed (boat type and hull colour, and the name of the boat), so that they would be more easily able to identify you during any rescue search.

And if you have DSC radio, and you have to send a digital distress message via pushing the DISTRESS button (note that a continuous 5 second press is needed to activate and send it), your application for the MMSI number has already given them all the required details for search and rescue purposes.

VHF SHIP RADIO LICENCE:

DON'T BE SHY - APPLY.

Please note that the Marine VHF Operator's Licence, i.e. the licensing of a person to operate Marine VHF radio equipment,

or GMDSS DSC VHF radio equipment, is a completely different subject, in which Ofcom have no interest.

No unlicensed operator has ever been prosecuted for sending a distress message, but please note that the law does require that at least one licensed operator should be aboard when any routine transmissions are sent from a vessel.

Please see the Jersey Sailing website or the RYA website for details of training provision.

Please pass this info on.

    NAVnet 3D Multifunction systems

Building on the well proven accuracy and reliability of Navnet Vx2, Navnet 3D's "Time Zero" seamless and instant pan, zoom and tilt technology, together with Furuno's rendering of Maxsea MM3D cartography (for the UK and Channel Islands based on cartography derived direct from UK Hydrographic Office data), and "PhotoFusion" integration of aerial photography for land areas and shallows (adjustable down to 7 metres below datum, with user-adjustable transparency levels) makes coastal, inshore, and shallow-water navigation in 3D a genuine advantage (reverting to conventional overhead "flat" 2D view is available at the touch of a button).

Renowned Furuno reliability, and continuing mastery of small craft radar technology (fed down from Furuno Deepsea Radar technology), and now with Ultra High Definition.

Fixed Displays for flush or bracket mounting are available in 8.4" and 12.1" (diagonal measurement of active display screen size, as is standard for all display equipment), and there is a Black Box system version with panel mount waterproof keyboard/trackpad, which uses separated display(s), whether Furuno waterproof displays or standard PC displays.

All systems are AIS target-display ready (requires an AIS receiver or transponder), and have been purpose designed for NMEA 2000 compliance, although retaining NMEA0183 input and output capability for interfacing with existing equipment.

Ultra High Definition network Radar can be incorporated (or added later if radar facility is not yet required) - 19" and 24" radomes, or 3.5', 4' and 6' open array radar scanners, all being ARPA-equipped as standard (up to 30 ARPA targets - requires a 10 Hz fast-update heading sensor)

Other options include high performance network echo sounder/fishfinder modules and transducers (up to 3kW), video cameras (analogue and IP, including PoE), MF/HF radio weatherfax receiver (for forecast charts up to 5 days, + Navtex) , and Network AIS receiver or transponder.

    COUNTERFEITED SOFTWARE

We are aware of stolen PC chart plotting and 2D/3D seabed mapping software and cartography, which has been criminally-hacked to operate without licensing.

The suppliers of such stolen property are EXCELSIOR at profiteering, because they pay NOTHING for it, and therefore pay nothing towards the ongoing development of the software, or towards the production and updating of the hydrographic and bathymetric data which is also stolen and hacked.

Andy also make Murray-culous amounts of money out of hard-working fishermen by selling them illegally-hacked and therefore entirely worthless pirated software and cartographic data. Furthermore the equipment can never legally be installed or repaired, nor therefore can it be legally supported or maintained, nor checked for any inaccuracies which may cause navigational danger.

The cost of this property theft is entirely borne by legitimate licensed users.

Any person or commercial entity providing support to an installation using pirated software becomes an

accessory to the criminal offence of Software Piracy, therefore we do not support such equipment.

Genuine software and cartography can be legally operated on any existing computer equipment, and is latest version.

    It also gives these advantages:

    1. The risk of equipment seizure and prosecution, or loss of support due to the imprisonment of the hacker or supplier will no longer affect you, therefore you will always be able to get support (and it's local).

    2. Genuine licensed software is upgradeable, without starting from scratch (no need to get ripped-off yet again by somebody who paid ZERO for it in the first place).

    3. Privately-generated data such as marks, waypoints, tracks and Bathymetric data acquired with any existing system is treated by us carefully and confidentially, and will be transferred to a legal, licensed installation without risk of data loss.
