HAMPSHIRE V SURREY at Southampton (West End) (NUL2), 16 JUNE 2002

Hampshire Hawks narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One last season and are, as yet, unbeaten in this year's Div Two campaign, having registered wins over Gloucestershire and Middlesex.

Able to call upon up to seven bowlers, Hampshire have always had other options; even when two or three of their number have been 'got after'.  But economy alone doesn't win matches, not even one-day ones, which is why Dimitri Mascarenhas (14 wickets at 12.64 in limited-overs cricket) and Shaun Udal should be regarded as the main dangers right now.

That said, the Hawks do have a few concerns with the bat - the main one being the absence of Robin Smith, who made 64 when these two teams met in the Benson and Hedges Cup at the start of May.  Only John Crawley and Derek Kenway (256 runs at an average of 32.00) are averaging over thirty in all one-day competitions.

Will Kendall - who currently averages just 16.33 - is set to skipper.

Even though Surrey have a good record against Hampshire since 1995, particularly away from home, their batting looks a bit thin against the undefeated Hawks.  It remains to be seen whether Alistair Brown and Mark Ramprakash can keep shouldering the burden.  Brown has passed fifty on four occasions in limited-overs cricket this season, but only once has his side gone on to win.

Adam Hollioake is set to make his first appearance of the season, so it will be an emotional day for everyone concerned with Surrey County Cricket Club.  Nadeem Shahid is also included in the 12-man squad, despite averaging 8.53 in the 14 National League innings he has had since making 43 against the Nottinghamshire Outlaws in May 2001.

D Kenway, W Kendall (capt), G White, J Crawley, N Johnson, N Pothas (wk), L Prittipaul, D Mascarenhas, S Udal, C Tremlett and A Mullally.
