KENT v SURREY at Canterbury (CC1), 19-22 JULY 2002

As Surrey seek their hundredth championship win against Kent, higher on the agenda is the apparent falling out between Graham Thorpe and Keith Medlycott.  Thorpe who asked to be rested on Wednesday, but to be included for tomorrow's game, does not see his name added to the squad.  Whilst it may seem a gamble to play Rikki Clarke ahead of the 32-year-old England left-hander, Clarke's emergence has been a revelation and his inclusion will only draw attention to the faith Surrey have in the youngster who could yet attend the England Academy in Adelaide this winter.

One of last winter's intake, Robert Key, has been Kent's leading run-maker so far in the championship.  But in a summer dominated by the bat 626 runs at an average of 39.12 falls a little short.  Smith, Nixon, Symonds and Fulton are all averaging more than 36, though.  But, in an attempt to shore up the batting James Hockley has been drafted in to replace Matthew Walker who has not repeated the encouraging form he showed in 2001.

Kent's bowling will hold more fears for the visitors.  Mark Saggers and Amjad Khan have both claimed three five-fers in this season's County Championship, plus Min Patel and Mark Ealham have shown admirable control.  24-year-old David Masters is likely to be preferred to Matthew Fleming.

Kent can always be relied upon to put up a fight and at Canterbury, where Surrey have not won since 1989, they will be a far greater threat than earlier this season when they were beaten inside three days at The Oval.  If Saggers and Khan can be tamed, Surrey could just sneak a win.

The only change to the eleven that lost to Warwickshire is the dropping of Nadeem Shahid in favour of Mark Butcher, who needs to try out his knee injury ahead of next week's Lord's Test.  Graham Thorpe is reportedly omitted from the side for Canterbury, despite putting in a request to play.  Alec Stewart and Alex Tudor are being rested on the orders of the England management and Martin Bicknell is out with a broken wrist.

D Fulton (capt), R Key, E Smith, A Symonds, J Hockley, P Nixon (wk), M Ealham, M Patel, A Khan, M Saggers and D Masters.
