LANCASHIRE V SURREY at Old Trafford (NUL2), 30 JUNE 2002
This will only be Surrey's fourth one-day visit to Old
Trafford in ten years, so the fact that Lancashire have two victories to the
Oval outfit's one in that time is of little consequence. What is
significant is that the Lightning have not won in any sphere for over a month
(although their current championship fixture against Kent at Liverpool appears
to be nicely poised going into the last day).
Lancashire's problem has been scoring runs. Apart from
Mark Chilton, who has made 521 at an average of 47.36 in limited-overs cricket
this season, there has been nothing to write home about. Stuart Law, whose
record of 260 runs in ten completed innings is grossly under par, is the only
other batsman averaging over twenty-five.
With the bowling they possess, the Lightning should be faring
much better. John Wood - 27 wickets at an average of 14.55 and an economy
rate of four an over - has been a revelation and there cannot be anyone more
economical that Peter Martin, who has also weighed in with 19 victims of his
own. Glen Chapple, Kyle Hogg and Chris Schofield complete the supporting
cast.

Since the return of Adam Hollioake, Surrey have won all three of their one-day
games, whereas Lancashire have now lost five on the spin, so I would be mad to
predict anything other than a Lions victory.

Martin Bicknell is out for at least five more weeks with a broken wrist, so the
only change from the side that beat the Sussex Sharks is likely to be James
Ormond in for Bicknell. Meanwhile, Mark Butcher is recovering from knee
surgery and Stewart, Thorpe and Tudor are on England duty.

N Fairbrother, M Chilton, G Chapple, S Law, G Lloyd, R Driver, W Hegg (capt,
wk), C Schofield, K Hogg, J Wood and P Martin.
