LEICESTERSHIRE V SURREY at Leicester (CC1), 14-17 AUGUST 2002

Having just met Sussex for the sixth time in 2002, Surrey travel next to Grace Road to play Leicestershire for the first time this term.

Surrey's last three visits to Leicester have ended in draws.  On this occasion, however, the visitors will be coming across a foxes' side that have not won a championship game since overwhelming Yorkshire at the beginning of June.  Since then they have lost away to Warwickshire and at home to Kent and drawn two more.

In that time only Neil Burns has consistently made runs (245 at an average of 40.83 in the last four), while Iain Sutcliffe was the model of inconsistency until he made a second innings hundred in the last match against Kent.

With the ball Leicestershire have also had their problems recently.  The pick of their bowlers is part-timer Darren Maddy.  Devon Malcolm has continued to confound his critics, but Philip DeFreitas and Matt Whiley have lacked a cutting edge.  Off-spinner Carl Crowe seems to be coming into some form, though.

Surrey have not lost two 'champo' matches on the trot since September 1997, so this will either be a draw or, most likely, a win for the visitors.

Mark Butcher and Alec Stewart are rested.  Martin Bicknell will undergo a late fitness test, but will probably be given longer to recover from his broken wrist.  The only changes to the side that lost at Hove, therefore, are likely to be James Ormond and Ian Salisbury coming in to replace Ed Giddins and Tim Murtagh.

T Ward, I Sutcliffe, D Maddy, M Kaif, V Wells (capt), D Stevens, N Burns (wk), P DeFreitas, C Crowe, M Whiley and D Malcolm.
