NORTHAMPTONSHIRE V SURREY at Northampton (NUL2), 4 JUNE 2002

Recently, Northamptonshire have enjoyed some success over Surrey in one-day cricket and with the likes of Mike Hussey and Tony Penberthy to face tomorrow, the visitors should not under-estimate their opponents, who have the second best Net Run Rate of any county in limited-overs competitions this year.  Surrey, by contrast, currently have the tenth.

With the bat Hussey has made 322 runs at an average of 53.66 and while David Sales has struggled badly in the championship the former Surrey YC can point to a record of 204 runs at 40.80 in the one-day arena.  In addition, Jeff Cook, Russell Warren and Mal Loye have all made decent starts.

Northants' bowling isn't so strong.  Penberthy's record is 10 wickets at an average of 14.50, not to mention an economy rate of 3.16, in limited-overs cricket, but so far he has only really had the support of John Blain and Darren Cousins.

The white Kookaburra ball seems to have been tailor-made for the likes of Bicknell, Giddins and Ormond.  Despite Surrey's poor run of late against the Steelbacks, it's hard to see anything but a Lions victory.

Surrey's representatives in the last Test are all thought to be available, except Mark Butcher who is nursing a sore knee.  So, expect Stewart, Thorpe and Tudor to come in for Batty, Carberry and Salisbury.  It's also a fair bet that Ed Giddins's Sunday League form will edge out Rikki Clarke.

M Hussey (capt), M Loye, D Sales, R Warren, G Swann, J Cook, A Penberthy, T Bailey (wk), C Greenidge, D Cousins and J Blain.
