SURREY v ESSEX at Guildford (NUL2), 28 JULY 2002
Since 1994, Essex have only lost two of the last nine
limited-overs meetings with Surrey to have gone the distance. Also, unlike
the home side's dominance in championship games at Guildford, the Lions have
lost two of their last three there and before that, in 1998, only managed to
scrape past Middlesex by one run.
On show for the visitors could be three batsmen averaging
over fifty in one-day cricket - Andy Flower, Ronnie Irani and Paul Grayson.
The supporting cast aren't bad either - 18-year-old Mark Pettini is well worth
keeping an eye on, plus Habib and Robinson are proven performers with the bat.
The Eagles attack also has the appearance of a tight unit.
Ashley Cowan and Ronnie Irani can take wickets as well as keep runs to a
premium, Andy Clarke, who perhaps is more famous for breaking James Foster's
arm, is proving to be something of a partnership-breaker and 37-year-old John
Stephenson has defied the doubters by proving naggingly accurate with the ball.
The main problem Essex face is injuries. Foster, who
has subsequently broken a thumb, is out plus Clarke and Grayson are doubtful.

It's difficult because both teams are in fairly good form. For Essex,
Monday night's defeat to Middlesex ended a three-game winning streak in the NUL.
Under Adam Hollioake, though, Surrey are unbeaten in one-day cricket this
season. Disregarding the recent history, I've just got a feeling that the
home side can do the necessaries.

The only changes to the side that beat Yorkshire in the championship match at
Guildford are possibly Murtagh and Ratcliffe to come in for Salisbury and
Shahid.

D Robinson, J Dakin, G Napier, A Flower, R Irani, A Habib, J Foster, A Cowan, J
Stephenson, J Middlebrook and A Clarke.
