Tomorrow’s opponents have made a poor start to the season. John Crawley’s match at Canterbury, in which he made 272 in nine hours to record the highest score by a Hampshire batsman on debut, was followed by an innings defeat to unfancied Leicestershire then a loss to Kent in their first Benson and Hedges outing. They were bowled out for 115, whereas Mark Butcher’s men managed 123 on Sunday. Does this mean we are in for a low-scoring match? Not at the AMP Oval. Surrey have won nine out of their last eleven one-day encounters with Hampshire, including four out of the last five in the B&H. It’s hardly surprising therefore that they are 4-9 favourites for tomorrow’s game, whereas the visitors are quoted at 7-4. Hopefully the weather will allow the contest to take place. The outlook isn’t good, though. Given our record in ten-over slogs, we certainly don’t want a repeat of the last Surrey v Hampshire B&H fixture at The Oval when Shane Warne took two for 6 in his two-over allocation. The visitors will be bringing new faces James Hamblin, Nic Pothas and Chris Tremlett with them. Hamblin is a 23-year-old pinch-hitting all-rounder, Pothas - a ‘Greek’ wicketkeeper - is filling in for the injured Adrian Aymes and Tremlett, who is representing the third generation of Tremletts, appears to have a big future ahead of him with the ball.
