SURREY V HAMPSHIRE at the AMP Oval (NUL2), 21 AUGUST 2002

Surrey's chances of gaining promotion now appears to rest upon the outcome of their next two games, both of which will be played under lights.  The good news for the home side is that their record against Hampshire in the one-day league is six wins out of the last seven.  Furthermore, on the road, the Hawks only have three victories and a tie to show for 14 encounters against the Oval outfit since 1969.

Hampshire, who are without John Crawley and Robin Smith, will be hoping debutant Jimmy Adams - no, not that Jimmy Adams - and 22-year-old Lawrence Prittipaul, who is averaging just 5.50 with the bat in this year's competition, can fill the void.  In Nic Pothas the Hawks possess arguably the best wicketkeeper-batsman in one-day domestic cricket, but because he bats so far down the order the majority of their runs in the NUL have come from Zimbabwe's Neil Johnson (265 at an average of 24.09).

Even with Chris Tremlett missing Hampshire's one-day bowling attack is fairly formidable.  Mascarenhas (16 wickets at 23.06 runs apiece in the NUL) and Mullally are proven performers in the short game, while Shaun Udal's off-spin has already undone Surrey once this year.  It will be interesting to see how 20-year-old quick James Tomlinson fares on his Oval debut.

Although Surrey have lost four out of their last five one-day fixtures, the Hawks lack the quality needed even to mount a challenge in Division Two of the Norwich Union League.  But, before last Sunday, the same could be said of the Derbyshire Scorpions!

The chances of Graham Thorpe making a return to first team action were dashed on Monday following the announcement that he would not be taking the field again in 2002.  Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart and Alex Tudor will be on England duty on Thursday, so are not available.  Rikki Clarke is unlikely to be risked and with Saqlain Mushtaq in Morocco still the Lions will be going into their second game running without an overseas representative.

N Johnson, J Laney, J Francis, W Kendall (capt), J Adams, N Pothas (wk), L Prittipaul, D Mascarenhas, S Udal, J Hamblin and J Tomlinson.
