SURREY v YORKSHIRE at Guildford (CC1), 24-27 JULY 2002

Apart from Darren Lehmann (993 runs at an average of 70.92), only Richard Blakey is currently averaging more than thirty-two with the bat for Yorkshire.  However, right now, it is the lack of teeth being shown with the ball that's probably perplexing the Yorkies more.  At least when their Aussie skipper is around runs are virtually guaranteed at one end, but nobody has taken a five-fer for them since the opening game of the season when the now injured Steven Kirby claimed 5-129 against visiting Surrey.

The Tykes lack of options could see them follow their hosts lead by fielding two specialist spinners.  The difference, however, is that Saqlain Mushtaq (30 wickets at an average of 17.00) and Ian Salisbury (34 at 22.94) can both boast excellent career records against Yorkshire.  Furthermore, they are currently averaging appreciably less than Richard Dawson and Andy Gray, who have taken just 17 wickets at 51.47 runs apiece between them in this year's County Championship.

Surrey have won their last seven championship fixtures at Guildford, they have not lost to Yorkshire since 1998 and have now beaten them by an innings twice on the trot.  Oh, and the home side are top of the league and the visitors are bottom.  Do you really need me to spell it out to you?

Nadeem Shahid comes in for Mark Butcher, who will be representing England at Lord's on Thursday, as will Alec Stewart and Surrey's guest player.  Martin Bicknell and Alex Tudor are both injured; as is Adam Hollioake of course (although Smokey is down to play despite having a chipped bone in a finger).  So, if any Yorkies moan to you at Guildford about Test calls and injuries...
