SUSSEX V SURREY at Hove (B&H Cup), 6 MAY 2002

Surrey have won on four out of their last five visits to Hove in one-day cricket, but Sussex really are the team to beat in the Benson and Hedges Cup Southern group.

Even though the home side do rely heavily on their top order batsmen - Sussex have probably got the longest tail going - nobody has managed to bowl them out in this competition.  Five players have recorded half-centuries and three (Richard Montgomerie, Tim Ambrose and Chris Adams) have already got two under their belts.

James Kirtley, Billy Taylor and Robin Martin-Jenkins are as effective a seam trio you are likely to find in the shorter version of the game.  All of them are conceding less than 3.6 runs per over and have regularly been amongst the wickets recently.  Added to this the home side have off-spinner Mark Davis, who is even more economical.

Despite dropping down the batting order in limited-overs cricket, Sussex's overseas player Murray Goodwin boasts a seriously healthy strike rate of 116.36.

One win doesn't mean that Surrey are any more predicable than before, especially if the game is likely to be weather-affected.  Put it this way, no-one more than me would love to see us win today.  If I could be granted another wish, it would be for Alec Stewart to impress in front of the Sky cameras.

There is no news on the health of Bicknell, Brown, Salisbury and Thorpe.  Don't forget that Jason Ratcliffe, one of our best one-day players, is also sidelined.  The squad for today's match could therefore feature the likes of Michael Carberry and Rikki Clarke for the first time this year.
