SUS
SEX V SURREY at Hove (C&G Quarter Final), 17 JULY 2002

If Surrey can dispose of Richard Montgomerie and Chris Adams cheaply it is hard to imagine anything but a win for Adam Hollioake's men, even though three or four household names are absent from the visitors' line-up.

Adams and Montgomerie are both averaging over 45 in one-day cricket this season.  The latter has now made 637 runs from seventeen visits to the crease and whenever the former Northants man has passed sixty this summer - which he has managed on four occasions - Sussex have gone on to win.

Chris Adams was injured when these two sides met in the Sunday League a few weeks ago.  Also missing from the Sussex line-up that day was the highly-regarded Tim Ambrose, who has been a consistent performer with the bat and can fill-in behind the stumps when required.

With the ball the loss of James Kirtley deals a big blow to the home side's chances, but Billy Taylor (29 wickets at 15.27 runs apiece) has been extremely impressive in the one-day arena this season.  Robin Martin-Jenkins has also proved difficult to get away.

James Carpenter and Dominic Clapp have done well of late, so could be the dark horses if they play.

Surrey have won four out of their last five encounters with Sussex.  The only defeat in that time was on the basis of losing more wickets than their opponents.  So the visitors have every reason to go into this match anticipating victory.

Alec Stewart comes in for Jon Batty and Jason Ratcliffe is set to get the nod ahead of Ian Salisbury.  Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe and Alex Tudor are all sidelined with minor injuries, whilst Martin Bicknell - who broke his wrist when Surrey last met Sussex - is not expected to be back in action for at least a month.

W House, R Montgomerie, T Ambrose, C Adams (capt), M Goodwin, R Martin-Jenkins, M Prior (wk), M Yardy, M Davis, B Taylor and M Robinson.
