SUSSEX V SURREY at Hove (NUL2), 7 AUGUST 2002

This will be fourth time these sides have met in limited-overs cricket this season.  Surrey have won two of them, but their record at against Sussex in day/night affairs is not so clever, neither is the Lions recent form under lights.  But, more significantly, the visitors are experiencing a slump at the moment after following up six straight wins in one-day cricket with three defeats in four days.

Seeking to take advantage of this will be openers Richard Montgomerie (750 limited-overs runs at an average of 46.87 in 2002) and Murray Goodwin, who made a valiant century against the visitors in this year's C&G Trophy quarter-final.  With Chris Adams said to be fit again, the Sharks will also be looking forward to the runs he can bring to the party, but if Sussex have a weakness it is the length of their tail.

With the ball James Kirtley and Billy Taylor (30 wickets at 18.23 runs apiece) will spearhead an extremely effective one-day attack.  Robin Martin-Jenkins and Mark Davis will seek to contain, whilst Kevin Innes completes the probable line-up.

The theory that sides are disadvantaged when they bat under lights is disputed when you look at Surrey's overall record in floodlit games - only three out of twelve have been won by the team batting first.

Alistair Brown, Adam Hollioake and Mark Ramprakash have all made runs at Hove this year.  They will all need to do so again if Surrey are going to turn their one-day form around.

Mark Butcher and Alec Stewart are on England duty, Martin Bicknell and James Ormond are both coming back from injury and Ian Salisbury is likely to be missing due to the impending arrival of his and wife Emma's first born.

R Montgomerie,
M Goodwin, C Adams (capt), T Ambrose, T Cottey, M Prior (wk), R Martin-Jenkins, K Innes, M Davis, B Taylor and J Kirtley.
