Yorkshire CCC have called in the West Yorkshire Police because they suspect someone of stealing from their club shop. The question is at the end of the season will the boys in blue be summoned again to investigate how Surrey managed to relieve the Tykes of the championship title? The visitors have not registered a championship win at Headingley since 1973 when they were indebted to a first innings 81 by Graham Roope, who now commentates on Yorkshire’s matches for local radio. Opening for the home side on that occasion was Richard Lumb, whose son Michael goes into tomorrow’s encounter as one of the young guns upon whom so much will depend. In his second season on the Yorkshire staff, the 22-year-old had just recorded 122 against Leicestershire at Leeds when he was struck down by injury. Injuries are the reason why Michael Vaughan was, today, talking down the Tykes’ chances of opening their account with a victory. Darren Gough is still recovering from a knee operation, plus Anthony McGrath (a centurion at the AMP Oval last year) and Craig White are both nursing groin strains. Darren Lehmann is available to lead the side, however. It will be interesting to see how he handles his charges, but more crucially whether the added responsibility impinges on his batting. Against Surrey his record in the championship is fairly impressive - 100, 57*, 55, 17, 66, 52 and 106*. No front-line spinner coupled with a lack of batting would suggest that Yorkshire stand a better chance on a green wicket. But man-for-man Surrey’s seam attack is the more superior and they have just bowled Sussex out twice on an Oval shirt-front.
