The twelve SCETNet CD-ROMS have been designed to introduce students, teachers and parents to the Internet. Each title contains student activities which illustrate how the World Wide Web can be used to enhance learning.

The activities are specifically designed for use in Intermediate 2 and Higher courses.

A selection of sites has been included on each CD-ROM especially for those who do not have access to the Internet. (It speeds up download time for those who do have access.) Direct links to live resources are also provided.

SCETNet for Media Studies
Media Studies is now being developed as a subject in its own right. Within its discipline students require information about media institutions which, in the past, has been difficult to find. SCETNet for Media Studies provides Web pages about films, newspapers, television and radio stations without the need to go on-line, as well as activities which introduce students to the use of the Internet for media research.

SCETNet for Business Studies
In preparing students for the requirements of industry, Business Studies must embrace the Internet. The CD-ROM allows students to research the operation of companies and to investigate the ways in which businesses use information technology. Details about the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are also included. Live links to up-to-date databases enable students to organise travel arrangements. SCETNet for Business Studies illustrates how to use the Internet in the classroom, as a fun and enriching learning experience.

SCETNet for Modern Languages
The Internet is a fantastic resource for Modern Languages. In order to introduce departments to the available resources, SCETNet for Modern Languages provides a number of significant sites and related student activities. Direct links to foreign language newspapers and other media resources have also been included for those with Internet access. It is an ideal way to start thinking about how to use the Internet to support learning.

SCETNet for Chemistry
Many chemistry teachers have created Web sites to support teaching and learning. A selection of such sites have been included on the CD-ROM. The concentrates on supporting new areas of content such as polymers, fullerenes and kevlar. Student activities as well as additional staff resources have been selected and provided. For Scottish teachers there is the additional attraction of student materials for all levels of Higher Still courses.

SCETNet for Art & Design
In the activities for expressive arts a variety of contemporary artists have been investigated: Ken Currie, Willie Rodger, Andy Goldsworthy .... Seascapes by Joan Eardley are included and there is an activity about L.S. Lowry. Photography is also examined.

Design briefs include product design, fashion, architecture and new technology. A number of case studies have been provided from major companies such as British Airways and Alessi.

SCETNet for English & Communication
This CD-ROM is divided into three areas: Language Study; Literary Study; Oral & Aural Study.

The language unit analyses the language of the press in a range of articles. Language techniques in a variety of literary genres are also considered. Writing activities include writing for specific contexts: reporting, persuading, discussing.

Literature study includes analysis of Shakepearean texts, contemporary drama, novels, short stories and a wide range of poetry.

The skills required to make individual presentations and to contribute effectively in group discussion are considered in the third unit.

SCETNet for History
This CD-ROM is divided into two areas: Historical Study Scottish & British; Historical Study European & World.

In the Scottish & British section, topics investigated include Wallace and Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots as well as the Act of Union. The English Civil War is considered and the unit also contains activities which consider the Easter Rising in Ireland as well as the suffragette movement, Liberal reforms and the post-war Labour government.

The European & World section begins by looking at the Explorers and includes an activity about the slave trade. Demand for change is investigated in the context of revolutions in America, France and Russia, as well as within the American Civil Rights Movement. The road to appeasement in Europe is studied and there are detailed activities about both Italian and German nationalism. The unit ends with an activity about the Cold War.

SCETNet for Information Systems
This CD-ROM is divided into five areas: The Internet; Moral, Ethical, Social, Legal; Applications; Multimedia and databases.

The first unit investigates the internet itself, its history, its etiquette, as well as contemporary developments. There are also activities about effective search techniques and what to look for in an ISP.

The second unit considers the ethical, moral, legal and social issues surrounding computer use (and misuse) and encourages students to question motives and consider consequences of their actions.

Unit three outlines the various types of software now available and considers where and when different types of packages can best be used.

Students can participate in the creative side of computing in unit four which looks at video editing and the publication of multimedia documents in electronic format, including publication on the web.

The final classroom unit details the ways in which databases are structured and encourages students to investigate their uses online.

SCETNet for Mathematics
This CD-ROM is divided into seven areas: Trigomometric Graphs; Graphical Calculators; Derivative of a Function; Straight Line; Functions & Graphs; Algebraic Techniques; Understanding Statistics.

The first unit includes four activities which investigate the transformation of trigonometric graphs. Each activity is a progression from the previous one.

The second unit includes four activities which use one approach to solving trigonometric equations graphically. It is designed to encourage the use of a graphical calculator.

The third unit is designed to supplement the normal teaching and learning of the derivative of a function and the graph of the derivative. Two activities provide access to animated and interactive activities which are difficult or impossible to make available in the classroom other than through the medium of computer technology.

Unit four is based on the study of the straight line and provides access to animated and interactive activities.

The fifth unit unit is based on the study of graphs of functions and also provides access to animated and interactive activities.

Unit six focused on aspects of algebra which are introduced at Intermediate 2 level and treated lightly at that level in terms of assessment. Higher level, however, assumes a deeper understanding and requires a much higher level of manipulative ability e.g. in surds and indices, especially for calculus but generally throughout the course.

The final unit includes three activities which focus on particular measures in statistics - mean, median, mode, standard deviation and semi-interquartile range. Boxplots and scatter diagrams are illustrated.
