The Army

Lieutenant Colenel Kellet was given the Freedom of the City for his command of the troops during the suppression of the weavers.

Each of the soldiers from the 39th Regiment who took part in the action received new stockings and shoes.

  • Why are the soldiers in the background?

  • Why are they painted with their backs to the weavers?

  • How does their grouping contrast with the weavers?

  • Comment on the symbolism of their clothing and banners?
