Jimmy Maxton

The second Clydeside leader featured in this panel is Jimmy Maxton. He can be seen in the foreground.

Maxton, a member of the "Independent Labour Party", was elected as an MP in 1922. He was one of ten MPs known as the "Clydesiders".

He was also one of the leaders of the "40 Hour Strike". In the painting he is shown encouraging protestors during that strike. The red flag - Clyde Workers - links the 1915-1916 and 1918 movements.
