Hunger Marchers

Paintings © Ken Currie, Reproduced courtesy of The People's Palace, Glasgow

The 1930s are often associated with the Great Depression.

In this panel the artist illustrates the 30s with the 1932 march to London by the National Unemployed Workers Movement. They were protesting against high unemployment and the Means Test. The "test" required anyone in employment to support the entire household.

In what ways has the artist chosen to illustrate the hope and determination of the marchers rather than their conditions?

The first news reporters are portrayed by the cine-camera operator at the front-left of this section. Why do you think the artist has included this development?
