UNFURLING OUR HISTORY... OUR FUTURE

Discovering the Past

Paintings © Ken Currie, Reproduced courtesy of The People's Palace, Glasgow
In this section of the panel an elderly man is shown exploring his past by examining the objects such as those to be found in the People's Palace which houses Glasgow's social history collection; objects which have featured in other panels. Young people are also shown discovering the past in the light of the collection.

Which symbols do you recognise? Why do you think these ones were chosen?

The role of artists in the retelling of history is underlined by the inclusion of the artist himself in the foreground of the painting (holding his brushes) along with another local artist, Marie Barbour.

In your opinion, why are the artists holding books?
