THE GREAT REFORM AGITATION ... UNION IS STRENGTHPanel ThreePaintings © Ken Currie, Reproduced courtesy of The People's Palace, Glasgow |
The situation in which the paintings are displayed was a further constraint on the artist. The mural is on the eight ceiling panels in the People's Palace museum. Four of the panels (1, 3, 5 & 7) are 86inches by 99inches (218cm x 251cm). The other four (2, 4, 6 & 8) are 80inches by 150inches (200cm x 381cm).The squarer panels are almost three dimensional, whilst the rectangular panels progress from left to right. As you study each panel consider how the shape of the frame has influenced composition. In celebrating the processions and establishing of trade unions the artist has given the workers in this painting a purpose and togetherness. What elements have helped to achieve this?
