THE SOCIALIST VISION

Scottish Labour Party

The right side of the panel shows a healthy alternative to the conditions under which the workers were living.

The men holding the banner are "Clarion Scouts". The "Clarion" was a socialist paper from which the "Clarion Scouts" took their name. There were many similar clubs and societies associated with the socialist movement which promoted cycling, choirs or, for example, hill-walking.

The banner names the "Scottish Labour Party" which was founded in 1888 and is an illustration of the events shown in the painting.

  • How is the painting reflected in the banner?

  • Why has the sunrise been included in the background of both painting and banner?

  • In what ways does the painting highlight the significance of education?
