Jackie-O Motherfucker - [Wow!]

After the flurry of media activity generated by Jackie-O Motherfucker’s acclaimed Fig. 5 CD [Road Cone Records, RoCo 024 CD] and prior to the imminent release of a double LP The Magick Fire Music on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! Label.  Fisheye offers the belated release of Wow!

JOMF are, if you must, a roving musical collective between the American cities of Portland, Baltimore and New York.  The band revolve around the nucleus of multi-instrumentalists Tom Greenwood and Jef Brown and a loosely bound selection of like minded musicians.
There is no one musical genre that JOMF could be, should be or would be happily tagged with.  Their eclectic blend of free jazz, rock (in the Sonic Youth sense of the word), folk, and country with electronics, tape loops, hip hop and turntablism, for example, ventures equally into the avant-garde as it does with popular culture.
Wow! steers away from the shorter semi-compositional/Improvised side of Fig. 5 where they explored the musical history of America with it’s elements of folk, country and spirituals alongside avant-garde, minimalism, free jazz and improvisation.  And remains on the improvisational side of JOMF’s work with two side long recordings made live, on the same day, in the studio with no overdubs.  Taking you, the listener, on a journey around the houses of free jazz, scuzz rock, minimalism, leftfield electronica and folk music to name but a few sites along the way.  Subtle percussion, minimal guitars and violin meet the swirl of electronics and turntable manipulation while the saxophone on side two’s ‘Love Horn’ brings the whole sound back around to that free jazz feel.
