Sea Fever

One of my favourite poems is 'Sea Fever', by John Masefield.

I must go down to the sea again
To the lonely sea and the sky
And all I ask is a tall ship
And a star to steer her by.

I had finished my Voyage of Discovery and felt that this had initiated a travelling theme. So I was looking for something to do to build on Voyage of Discovery and to continue with that travelling theme. I was also coming under pressure by my tutor to do something more than meditate in class. So I embarked upon Sea Fever using nautical devices and images and variety of materials and stitches.

It is now made up into a cushion (by me). I won't try to describe it but the material is 12 gauge canvas, I think, and that the fibres used include Shetland wool by 20th Century Fabrics, crewel wool by Appletons, Carron Watercolours., and DMC coton perle.. We much enjoyed the three-dimensional ship's wheel and also the mariners compass at the top right. My tutor was Pat Deacon who is now part owner of the Needle and Thread shop at Horsell, Woking, Surrey. On the far left is a shark fin which I put in at Pat's request. The P on the shark fin is a lucky charm for her in case she ever goes sailing in shark infested waters

I did paint the canvas first and used some of the markings on the canvas.   Much of the piece was made up as I went along.
