Summer came this week and with it the Basking Sharks. We had excellent views for two days of an adult (around 6mts) and teenager (around 3 mts) Shark feeding close in to the shore around Rua Reidh. We also saw Minke Whale and Dolphin further out from the shore. A really good week for viewing but today dawned with the inevitable gale blowing so not sightings today and time to write up here!

Gales, Severe Gales and Storm Force Gales!!!! Winter is upon us with a vengence. We have seen Snow Buntings at the Lighthouse for the first time..............is this a sign of cold weather to come? But, the house is snug and the fire alight with guests enjoying the sound of the wind and the sea outside.

Summer is almost over here and the weather is pretty autumnal. We had our first Gale of the autumn on Tuesday/Wednesday which effectively killed everything in our Garden here! Salt wind is no good for any plant.
We saw many Basking Sharks this year but less Minke Whale. The Gannets are ever present, especially when the wind is strong - they like a rough sea.
We are currently building/converting a house in the next village at the moment which will be available for let on a self catering basis next summer. Please enquire if you are interested. It is a lovely detached cottage with uninterrupted sea views, underfloor heating run by ground source energy, large country kitchen, dining room with log fire and panoramic window seating, a cosy stone walled sitting room with log burning stove, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The Lighthouse is also available on a self catering basis for large parties. See main web site for details.

We enjoyed a great evening this week watching three Basking Sharks from the lighthouse wall in great weather! The sharks had been around for a couple of days but it was great to sit outside at 10pm watching them and the setting sun.
Today we saw White Tailed Eagles in the woods over the hill from Rua Reidh. They are an immature pair in their first year of partnership - they laid an egg but being unpracticed parents unfortunately knocked it out of the nest - perhaps better luck next year!

Spring finally sprang this weekend with glorious weather and our first sitings of the year! Minke Whale and seals were seen from the lighthouse on Sunday and the first gannet. We also spotted Fulmars, Kittiwakes and Pied Wagtails and our usual spring visitor, Black Throated Divers. We have a board in the conservatory where guests can chalk up their sitings. Because of the higher than average rainfall this winter the spring flora is still hiding!.
