New Socialist Settlement

by Roger Warren Evans >> first published 20 March 2002

Introduction

I am no philosopher. But I stand in the tradition of the broad British Left - Christian, socialist and liberal - which has always valued the articulation of a coherent political philosophy, a body of principle which makes sense of a seemingly chaotic and unprincipled world, and which informs proposals for political action. For me, as for the French, pragmatism is not enough - politics is about the implementation of a coherent political philosophy. Margaret Thatcher, for all her shortcomings, served her dishes with philosophy - indeed that is one of the reasons why her political influence has been so enduring.

It follows that the failure of New Labour to deliver a coherent alternative to the Thatcherite Settlement is profoundly unsettling, for me and many like me. That failure threatens the final assessment of New Labour, as a reform movement. That is why Tony Blair, challenged by a Labour MP in the Commons to outline his "core philosophy", was stung into replying, by way of his LSE declaration. And that is why I am rash enough to offer, for your perusal exclusively here on www.warrenevans.net, my alternative New Socialist Settlement. This is my own "core philosophy".
