VOLUNTEERING

The voluntary sector is the crucible of social innovation. Its initiatives reveal what people want to do, when they are neither under direction nor compulsion, and receive no remuneration.

This Index relates to projects with which I am connected, as each entry indicates - if you have projects of your own, for which you seek the assistance of volunteers, let me know - it may be that they could be incorporated into this Index, if it it comes to be known and used.

ABEL Leisure Trust

Abel is a small, local, unincorporated trust, operating at below the £1,000 p.a. levels of mandatory registration - it has been formed to assist with the provision of public recreational facilities throughout South West Wales, although focusing in the first instance on the community of Mumbles, where I live - we are pioneering the development of boules in Mumbles, and planning French connections..

What you can do If you live in South Wales, let me know of any threatened sports facilities, where intervention by a charitable recreational trust might assist (e.g. dereliction or closure of public facilities) If in Swansea, consider volunteering to serve as an ALT Trustee If elsewhere in the UK, and you want to form a local recreational trust yourself, let me know Drop me a line

City Region Campaign

This is a UK-wide group of enthusiasts for the "city region" as the primary building-block of modern society, in both economic and constitutional terms > we were formed in 1995, to influence the political debate about the form that Devolution should take > we favoured provinces for England, Scotland and Wales which were firmly founded up component city and rural regions > Scottish devolution went ahead without that element, and in Wales it had little impact > we continue to argue that the power of our cities should be given better constitutional expression > we think that the issue will arise again, as the Government tackles English provincial devolution > copies of our ground-breaking statistical study identifying 41 practical regions for the UK Building a New Britain are still available (£2.50 inc postage and packing)

What you can do As I am the CRC Director, let me know if you share our concerns > we meet only rarely, while our cause is in the doldrums, but our day will come! Drop me a line

Croeso

This is planned as a charitable trust, currently restricted in its operation to Wales. Croeso is a company-limited-by-guarantee, registered with the single name "Croeso" (pronounced Croy-so) - and without the suffix Limited. Registration as a charity is still pending. "Croeso" is the Welsh word for Welcome and the Trust will seek to strengthen the processes of welcoming refugees and asylum-seekers to Wales. At the moment, the conduct of the Trust is the responsibility of four founder-Trustees, all based in Swansea. They are Tom Cheesman, Graham Humphrys, Pamela Willson, and myself, and I am the Trust and Company Secretary. But the plan is to extend to other parts of Wales, with local groups cultivating the welcoming processes in all Welsh communities.

What you can do If in Wales, start a Croeso group in your neighbourhood or town If interested and in England, consider a parallel initiative: we would be delighted to help, and if our charity registration is confirmed, the legal process would be straightforward If your interest is general, just Drop me a line

Labour Party

It is easy to forget, in these days of political professionalisation, that political party membership is essentially a voluntary matter - political parties have traditionally placed their principal reliance upon voluntary work, voluntary contributions > for Labour, that image has been complicated by the early involvement of the Trade Unions, and their professional management > all Parties now face crises in their "voluntary sectors", as professional politicians take over all the available political posts and opportunities - but the voluntary principle is still alive, and I hope that you will consider joining us -

What you can do You can join the Labour Party online, with your Credit Card at the ready - click through to The Labour Party - if you want to raise any concerns with me, before making up your mind, then Drop me a line .. and if your concerns include civil rights, check out the new Socialist Civil Liberties Association

LIBERTY

This is the former National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL), a label which became too cumbersome for contemporary communication purposes. I commend LIBERTY to you, as the leading all-Party voluntary campaigner for civil rights in the UK >> I am a Director of LIBERTY, a member of its Management Board as well as its policy-making Council >> for me, the civil rights theme (first crystallised in the 1930s, in response to fascism) has yet to make its full creative contribution to world politics >> the cause is a great one, check us out and join us
LIBERTY >> for Labour Party members, see also new Socialist Civil Liberties Association
What you can do Just join! We are keen to establish more local groups, to promote civil rights thinking throughout our towns and cities >> if you would like more information from me, before making up your mind, then drop me a line

LIBRI

This is already registered as a charitable trust for the provision of public library services > the project is planned to operate UK-wide, to supplement LA library services > LIBRI is a company-limited-by-guarantee, with a five-strong Board of Trustee Directors, meeting in London - Anne Hogg, Tom Jupp, Maureen Taylor, Kiffer Weisselberg and myslelf > the key to progress will be the identification of local situations where a community library might be developed, in parallel with a local authority system > LIBRI is also developing ideas for the provision of library management services, where outsourcing is an option -

What you can do If you know of any possible local community library projects, or opportunities, please let us know Equally, we need ideas for raising funds to develop our ideas, and we are approaching charitable and other foundations if you might take the lead in developing the work of LIBRI in your locality, the Trustees would like to meet you If your interest is general, just Drop me a line

Hygeia Trust

Hygeia is an innovative new trust, dedicated to the provision and improvement of public toilet facilities >> new ideas have been developed, both in the design and financing of public toilet facilities >> registration with the Charities Commission as a charity is still pending, reflecting the unusual and innovative character of the project >> this foundation has been supported by the Mutual Aid Centre of Bethnal Green, a charity where I am also a Trustee

What you can do Wherever you live, if you are minded to pursue alternative forms of public toilet provision, we want to hear from you, and we will try to contribute to your local project If you have professional public-health expertise, and would be willing to advise us or join the Trust Board, please let me know If you just want to stay in touch, just drop me a line

Mumbles
Community Council

I cannot invite you to volunteer for the Mumbles Community Council, of which I am a Member - although you can always keep in touch via
The Mumbles Book . But I do ask you to find out if there is a Community or Parish Council for your neighbourhood - and if there is, to consider standing for election or cooption - apart from Westminster, the "parish council" now the oldest democratic institution of government in the UK, and deserves your active support

What you can do For further information, contact the National Association of Local Councils, at
NALC >> or drop me a line

Peoples Bus Company

New not-for-profit trust, restricted in its initial operation to Wales - this is a new "public" bus company, seeking charitable status, to meet the needs of the old, the sick and disabled, and those on limited incomes - this project is at an early stage, with just three trustees (all based in Swansea) - we need the help of experts in the public transport field, either to advise us or to join the Board of Trustees - we seek to supplement the work of local community transport charities whose work is of increasing importance, as the privatised network continues to decline, particularly in rural areas.

What you can do If in Wales, tell us about unmet need for bus services in your area >> If you have bus transport expertise would be willing to advise us, please make yourself known! >> If your interest is general, just - Drop me a line

"a name="pondskater">

Pondskater Limited

This is not a charity, but a conventional business, in which I am a small-minority shareholder, also Board Chairman > we are linked in terms of similar (though different) shareholdings, and by having a common manager and entrepreneur in Ian Wallace of Edmonton > "Pondskater" is a revolutionary platform barge design, now patented, with full Certification at Lloyds > it is a waterborne platform structure with wide marine application, including barge transportation > Waterflow Transport currently uses conventional barges, but we plan to switch to the use of Pondskaters as trade allows > see also sister company Waterflow Transport Limited (below)

What you can do If your interest is general, get in touch and we will send you progress reports >> If you would like to get more involved and participate as a small investor (minimum £500) > please discuss that with me >> Drop me a line

Quakers

I am not a Quaker - I am an official "Attender" at Swansea Friends Meeting - I have been with the Quakers since my school-days
Leighton Park School, Reading though without feeling able to join, because I am no pacifist - and pacificism is core principle of Quakerism (there aren't many, but that is central) - I would encourage you, though, to find out where your local Meeting House is, and to make contact with them

What you can do click through to The Quakers and find out more, and get in touch with your local Meeting

Socialist Civil Liberties Association

Last year, this new Association was formed, to create a focus for civil rights thinking within the Labour Party, and plannig full affiliation to the Party in due course > the Human Rights Act 1998 represents one of Labour's greatest constitutional innovations, with huge implications for the future of our society > the Association meets for its first General Meeting at Westminster on 22 April 2002, when Members will assemble to take this project forward - Be there!

What you can do Find out more and join up (just £5 pa, no professional administration) if you are a Labour Party member SoCLA >> you will be among kindred spirits

Waterflow Transport  Limited

This is not a charity, but a conventional business, in which I am a small-minority shareholder, also Board Chairman > we also trade as The Green Barge Company because the entrepreneur and Managing Director Ian Wallace of Edmonton is committed to the re-introduction of barge transport to replace highway usage by lorries and to handle "green" cargoes like waste and construction materials > neither of us has been paid yet, but we are managing to develop the business slowly, with sweat equity > we currently operate in East London, between Watford and the Thames, but we are keen to explore other trading opportunities > see also sister company Pondskater Limited (above)

What you can do If your interest is general, get in touch and we will send you progress reports >> If you would like to get more involved and participate as a small investor (even £100) and even though there are no dividend forecasts, let me know >> If you have ideas for the commercial use of canals in your area, we would love to hear from you Drop me a line

Welsh Communities Campaign

Ymgyrch Cymunedau Cymreig - this is just for Welsh surfers, also a "political" lobby (albeit all-Party, not Labour) - not a charity or a business - we are a group campaigning for the extension of community council government in Wales - as a Community Councillor myself, I am an enthusiast for the development of grassroots small-community government, I think its day is yet to come...

What you can do Wherever you are in Wales, ask what your local community governance arrangements are: if you are without a Community Council, contact us for advice on how to get one - we can also help with the setting up and publicity costs - Drop me a line

What do you think? Drop me a line.
