Background
to the Company
ENSTEC
Services is an independent practice offering environmental, health &
safety and fluid dynamics consultancy to a wide range of industries including
the Nuclear, Petrochemical, Offshore and Chemical Industries.
We specialise in Air quality. This inludes indoor and ambient air qulaity arising from all ammnere of sources. Our expertrise includes: dispersion modelling, wind tunnel testing, dust and odour assessment, emissions management and monitoring, sick building syndrome, ventilation, and industrial health & safety including COSHH assessments.
We also have strong links with several establishments and offer the full spectrum of environmental services including environmental impact assessments and environmental management and auditing.
ENSTEC Services are members of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and the senior partner, Dr. Singh, is registered with the Environmental Auditors Registration Association as an Associate Environmental Auditor.
Dr. Singh is a recognised authority on air quality with over 20 years' experience of environmental and fluid flow studies conducted for a wide range of clients. He is also well versed in the preparation and provision of expert testimonies.

We have extensive experience of assessing the impact of all manner of developments and sources on ambient air quality. This includes initial survey of background air quality, emissions inventory, dispersion modelling, and ipact assessment. Our expertise includes the design and assessment of stacks and mitigatory measures to reduce emissions and their impact on the environment. Tools and skills at or disposal include :
Dispersion

Dispersion Modelling
Although
use of dispersion modelling is relatively commonplace, factors such as
topography, building effects and atmospheric stability are often poorly
treated. A high degree of competence is therefore required to select
the most appropriate model, to specify appropriate input data and most
importantly, to evaluate the results. This requires an understanding
of the dispersion process coupled with the experience, not just of numerical
modelling, but of measurements of real-life situations and physical (wind
tunnel) modelling.
We are unique in that we offer all of these services :
Computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) models can be used to map entire flow fields as well
as examine dispersion from virtually any source or release type.
This incudes dispersion from fires, releases within enclosed areas, and
a wide range of scenarios that cannot be handled by dispersion models.
Here again however, experience of the physical process is necessary in setting up, running and evaluating the results.
Wind tunnel modelling offers possibly the most accurate method of modelling releases from all manner of sources in the presence of buildings or complex topography.
Here, dispersion
from multiple sources over complex terrain with strong building wake effects
are present.
Qualitative (flow visualisation) and quantitative
data (concentration measurements) can be obtained for use in design (optimising
stack location, height, release condition) and / or for impact assessment
when used in combination with a model.

All manner of sources from virtually all industries can be modelled,
provided the appropriate scaling is adopted.
Here the simulation of a release of gas from an area source on the
surface below an offshore platform is simulated.
Wind tunnel tests can be used for the following :

Dust & Odours
Our experience includes extensive work on modelling dusts and odours.
This is supported by wind tunnel data including detailed measurements on
fluctutating concentrations - highly relevant to the assessment of odours.
We have developed techniques for odour assessment and modelling which have
withstood extensive scrutiny at public enquires.
Emissions Management & Monitoring
Extensive experience of emissions inventory and development of emission
factors.
Professional monitoring of emissions using the most relevant methods
and protocols with detailed evaluation and interpretation of data and presentation
of results in a format consistent with submissions to the Environmental
Agency. Because of our strong background in fluid dynamics we are
particularly skilled in monitoring of aerial emissions. We have our
own in-house designed iso-kinetic sampling equipment for particulate sampling
to US EPA Method 5 and BS3405 standards. Capabilities also include
process monitoring. Samples analysed by independent NAMAS accredited
laboratory.
ENSTEC Services has contributed to many Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's) and offer the following :-
Sick Building Syndrome
We carry out detailed indoor air quality survey where the usual comofrtbfcators
such as temperature and humidity are mionitored together with indoor air
pollutants such as Carbon dioxide (an excellent surrogate indicator of
indoor air quality) or any other that may be relevant to the building.
Where demmed necessary we also monitor for mould and insect debris to ensure
that all possible factors are taken into account. We also assess
the status of ventilation and determine the actual and ideal fres air requirements.
In the example below we dtermine the air exchange rates from concentration
measurements.
Meteorological Monitoring
Extensive experience of designing, specifying and installing systems
for monitoring and analysisng meteorological data for routine assessment
of environmental impact or for assessment of emergency response.
Analyses to determine atmospheric turbulence including surface rougness
length and atmospheric stability.
Health & Safety Assessments
Assessments of airborne emissions in the workplace - by monitoring
where necessary. Provides practical solutrions for minimising exposure.
Services include:
Occupational Exposure Monitoring
COSHH Assessments
Local Exhaust Ventilation assessment
Health & safety policy
Emissions from a variety of sources within the workplace can result
in occupational exposure limits being exceeded.
Fluid Dynamics
Wind flows and wind effects
Wind loads and surface pressures
Fluid Induced Vibration
