The herd was established in 1984 when we moved to Hollin Grove Farm. John and I, (both 'townies') found ourselves with 10 acres of land and nothing to eat the grass. As a child, John had spent a lot of time with his uncle, a dairy farmer, and he had always wanted to have a few cows of his own, but preferred not to have to milk them.
This was therefore a golden opportunity to realise a dream so he started looking for something suitable. His main criteria was to have something docile, easy calving and good to look at, so it didn't take long to decide on the Hereford.
He soon came across 3 heifers for sale and went along with a trailer to collect them. It was only at this time that we discovered that the animals were 'pedigree', and that there was such a thing as a breed society. The heifers were installed on the 10 acres and we spent hours and hours just looking at them. They gave us a lot of pleasure, but on reflection, we should not have spent so much time 'looking', we should have been learning!
Therefore, we have some pretty horrific and amusing tales to tell, talk about coming down to earth with a crash! Call and see us sometime and we'll tell you about it.
